Proposed Minutes of the April 2015 Meeting

A regular meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on April 14, 2015, at Frank and Camille's Keyboard Center, 229 B Glen Cove Road, Carle Place, N.Y. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Michael Slavin. Six members were in attendance.

The annual election of chapter officers was held, and the new slate is President Michael Slavin, Vice-President Paul Eccardt, Secretary Richard Liptzin, and Treasurer Paul Keogler.

The technical presentation was by Amy Tierman and Katie Coleman from Brooks Ltd, supplier of fine piano parts and hammers. Brooks Ltd. was started in 1979 by Walter Brooks and his wife Vivian upon seeing the need for replacement hammers for the industry. They are the primary distributor of Abel Hammers from Germany. Katie discussed the history of wool and the sheep it comes from. A slide presentation was shown about the preparation and manufacture of wool for piano hammers, including willowing, milling, carding, and felting. Sample hammer moldings and felt were distributed to the members for examination. A discussion of the cold and hot methods of hammer production followed, as well as the measurement requirements and methods needed for accurate hammer replacement and ordering.

The meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m.
