Tech Tip
by Michael Slavin, RPT

Many Samick / Kohler & Campbell grands have soundboard decals that unglue, and curl and lift up, sometimes to the point of even buzzing against the strings. Here is a method to reattach the decal to the soundboard. Take great care as to not disturb the lifted portions of the decal, as the film can tend to be brittle and fragile, and can break easily.

  • Brush away any loose dust and debris on the soundboard under the decal, with a plumber's flux brush between the strings
  • Clean the soundboard area under the decal with mineral spirits, using a long throat swab or Q-tip attached to a hammer shank
  • Apply PVC-E or Roo glue (both dry clear) to the soundboard area under the decal with a hobby paint brush. Wait a minute or two for the glue to become tacky.
  • Insert 1/4" wood slabs vertically between the trichords, working outward from the still attached decal portion towards the outer edges. Use the longer slabs in the midde (starting where the decal is still attached to the soundboard), and then use the progressively shorter ones near the plate strut(s).
  • Place a large weight across the top edges of the wood slabs, to secure the decal in place. Let glue dry thoroughly before removing the weight and slab assembly. (a large book works well)

Note: the bottom of the wood slabs is covered with smooth clear packing tape, so as to not scratch or damage the soundboard or decal surface. The black markings indicate the top surface, so there is no confusion as to which side to use against the decal.
