Proposed Minutes of the September Meeting
by Michael Slavin - Acting Secretary

A regular meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on September 15, 2015, at the workshop of President Michael Slavin in New Hyde Park. Seven members were in attendance. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.

The technical was given by Andy Saderman of the New York City Chapter PTG. His presentation began with a discussion of his responsibility for 100 pianos at the Music Department at Queens College, and the many issues and pressures which must be addressed with such a large institutional account. He continued by investigating the many areas of grand piano regulation which are very often overlooked or simply ignored, which ultimately will affect the overall performance of the action. The keyframe was the first priority to be attended to, including tightening, punchings, pins, glide bolts, polishing, cleaning, etc. in order to achieve stability in all subsequent adjustment; the importance of the backrail cloth thickness was also emphasized. Bushings, mortises, and balance hole problems were noted as particularly noteworthy. The class continued with the necessity for proper measurements before proceeding with work, and the method to determine accurate bore distance. Extraneous noises were discussed, and the advantages of different adhesives to secure loose or new felts, clicking keytops, etc. This was followed by a discussion of keyframe bedding, and a demonstration of the new WSG tool developed for this procedure. At this point, the many problems that should be carefully examined in the stack were finally addressed before actual regulation begins. These included knuckles, spring tension (and its relation to checking), pinning, loose rails, button and heel felt issues, checking height, as well as seasonal considerations. Lastly, let-off and drop were discussed. Many tangential discussions among the assembled group were informative and stimulating. Refreshments were served, and the meeting was adjourned at 9 p.m.
