This month's technical will be by the renowned rebuilder Shawn Hoar from Hartford, Connecticut.

Beginning as a piano repair apprentice in the mid 70's at Goss Piano in West Hartford Ct and an untimely death of owner/mentor, Shawn established Shawn's Piano in 1981 offering sales of vintage pianos, restorations and repairs. In 1986, he began soundboard making and replacement. In 2001, Shawn's became the exclusive Connecticut distributor for Ritmüller pianos. Housed in a climate-controlled complex, Shawn's Piano includes 4,000 sq ft cutting-edge restoration workshop using modern technology to guide an old-world craft, and a 4,000 sq. ft. showroom of new and vintage pianos. The topic of Shawn's technical will be "Woods of the Piano," a highly acclaimed class given at the national convention and many regional conferences.

The presentation includes understanding the specialty woods of piano making from over 100 years to the present. Choosing woods based on acoustic, structural, and aesthetic properties will be discussed, covering rims, piano backs, pinblocks, soundboards, ribs, bridges, keybeds, keyframes, keys to action parts, lids, legs, lyres, desks, rests, and panels.

The Executive Committee will meet prior to the general meeting at 5 p.m. at the Carle Place Diner, on the northeast corner of Old Country Road and Glen Cove Road.
