Proposed Minutes of the September Meeting
by Allan Schumacker - Secretary

A regular meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on September 13, 2011, at Frank and Camille’s Keyboard Center located on Old Country Road in Carle Place. Nine chapter members and five guests attended.

President Slavin called the meeting to order at 7:03 P.M. New chapter members Curtis Schaeffer, Richard Liptzin, and Valerie Sulzinsky were introduced.

The minutes for the May, 2011 meeting were accepted by general consent.

Treasurer Paul Keogler was not present to report on the status of the chapter’s finances.

President Slavin announced the following:
  • Paul Keogler sustained a hand injury in a table saw accident. Fortunately, he still has all of his fingers, but will require extensive physical therapy to regain full use of his hand.
  • Great technicals for the coming year have been scheduled.

Alex Kostakis offered to give a technical presentation at a chapter meeting if we needed guest speakers.

The technical discussion for the evening was on cleaning grand pianos in the home. Various people shared their thoughts and experiences on the matter. Thoughts and ideas shared included:
  • The use of a rubber-coated, flexible soundboard-steel to prevent accidental damage to the piano finish.
  • Use of a paintbrush along with the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner to clean the plate around the tuning pins.
  • Use of mineral spirits to clean the soundboard.
  • Use of a package of baking soda placed inside a vertical piano to absorb odors.
  • Use of dilute dish detergent as a cleaning solution.
  • Use of Formula 409 for cleaning.
  • Use of a wire wheel mounted in a drill for cleaning rusty string coils and tuning pins.
  • Use of a 1/8 inch slotted screwdriver and a rag for cleaning the dirt off the plate around the tuning pins.

The meeting ended at 7:52 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,
Allan N. Schumacker, RPT
