The General Meeting

The general meeting for this month will be held on Tuesday, September 15 starting at 7 p.m.

Frank and Camille's Keyboard Center in Carle Place, where we have held our meetings for so many years, has closed. This month's meeting will be held at the workshop of President Michael Slavin, at:

158 Devonshire Drive
New Hyde Park, New York 11040-3633
(516) 781-8888

The Executive Committee is looking for a new permanent meeting place, and the membership will be notified in upcoming newsletters of any changes.

This month's technical class will be given by Andy Saderman of the New York City Chapter. Andy's topic for the presentation is "The Pitfalls of Grand Regulation," which will discuss the problems overlooked during routine procedures and their consequences. He will also present some interesting tools and their functions.

Andy has worked for both Sohmer pianos as a tuner and rough voicer, and at the Steinway showroom as a floor tuner and fine regulator and voicer. He has also performed warranty service and concert work in the field. Andy has been an independent technician with his own business for 40 years, and has been the technician for the Aaron Copland School of Music (Queens College) for 25 years.

The Executive Committee will meet prior to the general meeting at 5 p.m. at:

Mama Theresa's
2429 Jericho Turnpike
Garden City Park, NY 11040

The restaurant is located in the middle of the shopping center which is between Marcus Avenue and Herricks Road.

The June meeting was our season-end dinner party, which was held on Tuesday evening June 9, 2015 at Sangria 71 in Williston Park. Consequently, there are no minutes this month.

Tech Tip
by Michael Slavin, Chapter President

We are all now familiar with "slow close" fallboards. But I recently encountered a (presumably) hydraulically dampened lid for the first time, on a Hailun grand piano. The following photos show the hinge mechanisms which support and reduce the weight of the top lid, and control its motion.
