The General Meeting

The general meeting for this month will be at our regular meeting place on Tuesday September 9, 2003 starting at 8 PM at:

The First Church of Baldwin
(United Methodist)
881 Merrick Road
Baldwin, NY

This month's technical class will be given by Ruth and Webb Phillips. The topic is in-the-field finish repair.

The previous general meeting was our end-of-season dinner party, held on Tuesday evening June 10, 2003, at Fratelli Iavarone Cafe in New Hyde Park. Our special guest of honor was Ruth Juhn. Not surprisingly, a major topic of conversation was Ernie Juhn and members' personal recollections and reminiscences of him.

Tech Tip
by Michael Slavin, RPT

I find it extremely handy to keep a small roll of tape in my toolcase. Almost any kind of tape will do (masking, electrical, scotch transparent, etc.), which can be useful for a variety of quick repairs. If a pedal-rod pin is rattling in the hole of the damper lift rod in a vertical piano and you do not have the appropriate rubber pin bushing, wrapping the pin with some tape will silence the noise. A travelling center pin in a grand hammer shank, or in a vertical jack flange or elbow center can be temporarily held in place with a piece of tape until you have the time to properly repin. Tape can also function as a "third hand" in keeping parts aligned and in proper position during repairs or during glue setting. You will find countless other uses for tape on a daily basis without a doubt. (Note: I particularly prefer the clear first-aid tape available at the major drug stores, which is also terrific for covering the numerous nicks and cuts that we constantly suffer in our work).
