Proposed Minutes of the April Meeting
by Allan Schumacker - Secretary

A meeting of the Long Island Nassau Chapter, PTG was held on April 13, 2010, at Frank & Camille's Keyboard Center located at 371 Old Country Road in Carle Place, NY. Six chapter members and four guests attended.

The meeting was called to order by Michael Slavin at 7:06 PM.

The minutes for the March 9, 2010 meeting, as published in the online newsletter, were accepted by general consent.

The treasurer’s report was accepted by general consent.

President Michael Slavin announced the following:

  • John Luca is now an associate member of our chapter.
  • Curtis Schaeffer is applying for membership in our chapter.
  • The location for our June dinner will be published in the May newsletter.
  • Next month's meeting will take place on Tuesday, May 4, at Frank and Camille's store in Melville.
  • Don Mannino from Kawai will be the guest speaker. Dinner will be provided. The meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM.

The business meeting ended at 7:11 PM. Scott Jones from PitchLock Inc. was introduced. He talked briefly about his career and his years working for Steinway & Sons.

The evening’s presentation was about the PitchLock touch-rail. This easy-to-install device replaces the keystop rail. It is an aluminum rail with 88 adjustable springs that bear down on the keys. The purpose of the touch-rail is to make a heavy action lighter. It is capable of reducing the down-weight of a key by as much as 20 grams. Low key upweight is not affected with down-weight reductions of up to 10 grams. The PitchLock touchrail is meant to be installed only on grand pianos.

Mr. Jones, with the aid of his computer, described the installation procedure. Installation does not require any cutting or drilling and is easily reversible. The lecture was also accompanied by a hands-on demonstration.

The Pitch Lock touch-rail is reviewed in the current issue of the Piano Technicians Journal.

The meeting ended at 8:41PM

Respectfully submitted,
Allan N. Schumacker, RPT
