Holes are drilled and marked with dowels to act as reference points in reinstallation. Andre mentioned that although we do not do much of this, some people may want it done because of sentimental value or because they like the instrument. He also said that it was a good idea to replace the soundboard at the same time.

The meeting ended at 9:20. We thank Andre for his interesting and informative presentation and for coming to visit us from Canada. We also thank Lee Dobrins for his loan of the television and VCR unit which made this presentation possible.

The reason that a piano has to be started at a higher level than the desired outcome when pitch raising is because the plate compresses, not because the strings are stretching. When blind tuning the treble, the tendency is to pull it up too much, and then it's much harder bringing the piano down. If this also happens to you, try tuning only one string of each note a little sharper than it should be. If you fine tune with a temperament strip, you will be tuning all your middle strings first. If this is the case, and you want to try this trick of raising only one string per note, you will want the pitch raise to be distributed evenly among the left, center, and right strings. On the first note you are blind tuning, tighten the left string, the second note, tighten the middle string, the third note, tighten the right string, and so on. This seems to work well, but I think that a normal double tuning works a little better.

Next month's meeting will be our season-end dinner party, location and details to be announced.
