The General Meeting

The general meeting for this month will be held on Tuesday, Tuesday April 13, 2021 starting at 7 p.m. For everyone's safety, we will be holding this meeting remotely via Zoom. To participate, make sure you have Zoom installed on your device: download Zoom

You will receive an invitation by e-mail early on the day of the meeting with a reminder shortly before the meeting.

This month's technical class will be by an old friend of our chapter, Alex Kostakis of AC Pianocraft, which is well known for its very fine rebuilding and restoration of high-quality grand pianos. Alex was contacted to evaluate and regulate a very poorly reconditioned Steinway B action (1939) which was hardly playable. Everything from incorrect replacement parts and alignment, to great deviation from proper specifications presented a great challenge, as the client did not wish to invest further in more new parts and action work. Alex wants to present how he approached this problematic action using all the existing parts, to achieve an acceptable level of performance and customer satisfaction. His expansive knowledge will certainly enlighten us to how to achieve greatly improved regulation.

Proposed Minutes of the March 9, 2021 Meeting
by Richard Liptzin - Secretary

The meeting was called to order by Mike Slavin at 7 p.m. Ten members were present.

The technical was given on the Zoom platform by Christian Bolduc, president of Pianos Bolduc, Canada. The topic was recapping a vertical bass bridge.

Christian began with a history of his company and himself, his products and his soundboards and pinblocks. A video presentation was shown which displayed his expertise on recapping an upright bridge.

Christian does fine and meticulous work, as he showed us his procedures and tools he uses to create excellent bridge work.

Next was how to measure from original bridge and transfer measurements to the new bridge. A video of a bridge installation on a Baldwin grand was shown. To reach Christian go to PianosBolduc.com

The meeting was extended to 8:30 as members had many questions to discuss. A very interesting and informative meeting.

Side note: Years ago we had to tune to 440 for opera singers, concert violinists, advanced players, etc. Today, beginners and intermediate players go on their iPads with apps that recognize the piano notes that must be at 440 to work. Make sure you ask the customer if an iPad is being used.

I will be retiring from secretary duties as of now and thank the members for this opportunity.
