Tech Tip
by Michael Slavin, Chapter President

The first few dampers in the tenor section of a grand piano, usually offset to clear the plate strut near the bass break, can often present regulating problems. It can be difficult to obtain good, clean dampening on these first tenor tri-chord strings, without ringing overtones. I recently serviced an old Weber grand, and obviously a previous technician was having just such a problem with this piano, yet arrived at a novel and very effective solution. He took a tri-chord wedge felt from a vertical piano, with the wood backing and all intact, and glued one of the triangular ends directly to the end of the damper felt in the piano. Although the repair may have been visually inelegant, with a "cantilevered" vertical felt hanging in space when the dampers were lifted, the actual "cut-off" of the sound was totally clean, quick, and identical to all the other dampers. I must admit that I was quite impressed with this creative solution to an often vexing problem.
