Tech Tip by Michael Slavin, RPT

Re-installing a hammer butt back into the action of a vertical piano after it has been removed for repair can often be frustrating because the flange may keep flipping up or back, or the butt may move out of position on the rail as you push the jack aside and try to install the screw (into the holes which are no longer aligned). This is especially true of spinet drop actions, which are difficult enough to service under any circumstances. An easy way to simplify this installation is to place the butt/shank/hammer into its proper position, and then clamp the hammer to the adjacent hammer with a vise-grip, large alligator or stationary clip, or C-clamp. This will keep the parts in place, the screw holes aligned, and prevent any movement as the flange screw is inserted. To further simplify matters, move the two shanks and hammers all the way forward and block them against the strings by wedging anything you have available between the hammer rest rail and the shanks. This will raise the butt, and increase the visibility and accessibility of the butt flange screw hole, making the screw installation quite easy.
