The General Meeting

This month we will be having a joint meeting with the Suffolk chapter, to be held at Gary Schultz' shop. Don Manino from Kawai will give the presentation on Tuesday, February 15th.

Please note that this is the third Tuesday of the month, not the usual second Tuesday.

There will be two 90 minute presentations - the first at about 4:00 in the afternoon and the second will be at about 7:30 PM. One seminar will be a detailed discussion and demonstration on voicing pianos (including the effects of regulation and string work on tone color), and the other will be a discussion of the new carbon composite action, how it was developed and why, and some fabulous slow motion films from Kawai's R&D department showing how actions perform during fast repetition, etc. This class is a rare peek into the process of action design, with a discussion of how different aspects of the piano action affect the tone of the instrument, and how the pianist and action interact during performance.

Summary of the January Meeting
by Marty Dinerstein - Secretary

Members of the chapter assembled at Frank & Camilles in Westbury on January 11, 2005. Kent Webb of Steinway & Sons was present (with his wife) to answer any and all questions about Steinway and Sons and Baldwin pianos. Kent mentioned that Steinway and Sons in New York has plans to bring back into production the Model A grand piano. Four prototypes have already been built. Although the Model A piano is still being manufactured in Hamburg, Germany, it hasn't been manufactured by Steinway & Sons in New York for quite some time. We thanked Kent for joining us that evening and answering our questions.
