Pleasing the Customer by Paul Eccardt, President

Having pianos at home, playing them, and servicing them has helped make me realize the important things that musicians need. Things that we as technicians can and cannot get get away with, and still make the customer happy. Here are some things that piano players will hear: squeaking pedals or keys, ringing dampers, buzzes, clicks, out of tune unisons, even extreme differences in tone quality. Here are some things that players will feel: scraping pedals or keys, sticking keys or slow keys, blocking or bobbling hammers, etc. If you are servicing someone's piano and you have only so much time and the customer has only so much money, you're better off focusing more on these things than trying to do a precise regulation. It is true that regulation will eliminate most of the problems, but not all of them. If you go through most or all of the steps of regulation as fast as possible, then make sure all the important things are done, the customer will be happier than if you did a precise regulation and tuning and left a buzzing sound board, a scraping pedal and three notes in the middle of the piano extremely brighter than the ones next to it.
